Annapolis 5K

The Jennifer Summers Barrett Memorial Volunteers on the Run 5K is only 2 weeks away! This is a family friendly and pet friendly race is held at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis, Maryland. The 5K race is unique to the area, because it is one of few races that accommodates so many ages of participants, as well as dogs. While many of the runners are members of the Junior League of Annapolis, many area residents also come out to participate. The annual race offer prizes for  specific age groups, including children under 10.

Whether you are an experienced runner looking for an easy and fun race to complete with your family, or a novice runner looking to extend your mileage, this race is for you! Increasing your distance should be done slowly, not increasing more than 10% every week. There are many training programs available for those interested in running, but haven’t run more than a few minutes at a time, including the popular Couch-to-5K program. As you increase your stamina, look to runs like the 6K or 10-mile run as your next stepping stones. With time you may find yourself wanting to run a half or full marathon within a year!

There are many health benefits from running for adults and kids. As with adults, active kids are less likely to be obese and suffer from cardiovascular disease. They are also less likely to experiment with drugs or cigarettes and avoid friends that do not also participate in a healthy lifestyle. It is important to check with your children’s doctor before starting a running program.

For more information about the annual race, visit the official Facebook page. You can also register today on Active.com!

Our 2014-2015 Junior League year is well underway and we’ve got some amazing events lined up for you this year. Our Internal Communications, Gala and Fun Run Committees are especially hard at work, planning to make this year the best year yet for our members and community neighbors.

Before you head off to tonight’s October General Membership Meeting, check out our lineup of what’s in store for you this year, including a very special treat at the end of December (hint, it includes animals).

Provisional Bus Tour

Yes, it is for provisionals only. Our newest members-to-be will enjoy an exclusive tour of our community partners, Sarah’s House and the Center of Help. The day begins with some scrumptious little breakfast treats at the Junior League office, courtesy of our Consulting Committee.

Happy Hour

Happy Hour at Blackwall Hitch

All members–new and not-so-new–are invited to attend our first Happy Hour event of the year. Our October gathering will be held at the newly opened Blackwall Hitch in Eastport. The food and ambiance alone are worth stopping by. But more importantly, fellow League members will be there, which is reason enough to come hang out and enjoy a refreshing post-work cocktail!

New Actives & Transfer People Party!

It’s a People Party! But you need to be a new active or transfer to attend (or a member of our 2014-2015 board)–not that we don’t love all of our members equally. The Consulting Committee invites all first and second year actives, as well as new transfers, to gather for a little wine and socializing. Our guests of the hour will also have the opportunity to get to know members of the Consulting Committee and Board.

It’s almost time for our annual 5K event! We’re excited to be back again this year at Quiet Waters Park, hosting our walk/run event for League member families and non-member families in the Anne Arundel County Community. Military Bowl Parade

Military Bowl Parade

That’s right–we’re marching in the Military Bowl Parade! But that’s not all, the Budweiser Clydesdales will be back again this year for this family-friendly parade. What better way to enjoy the festivities than to be in the festivities. And who knows, maybe you’ll get an exclusive chance to take a selfie with one of those famous animals. Either way, come out Dec. 27 and help us represent our amazing League as we march from downtown City Dock to the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Spouses, partners, children, and other members of your family are invited and encouraged to march with us! More details will be released next month, including hints on a very special surprise too!

*Please note, all above events include links to register/sign-up for the events. Please RSVP so we have a headcount on who will be attending the respective events. Thank you!
